About The Event

Starting at Springer Mountain we will spend 5 days hiking north and ending at or around Unicoi Gap. We will be relocating our passenger van daily to follow the group, which will allow you to carry less gear, clothing or food than you would traditionally have to carry on a section hike. Think of this as a supported section hike! Our van will be meeting us at various cross roads if you need to drop or add gear, desire skipping a section to rest, or want to jump ahead if you feel like you may be falling behind the group.

We recommend and use FarOut Guides on trail. Please download the app and purchase the first section “Springer to Standing Bear Farm” ($8.99) prior to event and we will walk you through how to use it before we begin.

AIRPORT PICKUP will be at Nashville International on 10/7/22. Time TBD

What to expect:

5 days in a row hiking approximately 8-15 miles a day maximum. Historically, weather should be comfortable near mid-October with daytime temps in the 70s and night in the high 40s/low 50s with slim possibility of rain as October is Georgia’s least rainy month. The sun rises around 7:35am and sets around 7:10pm.

October 7: Depart the midwest early AM, arrive and stay in Alpharetta, GA. Dinner in town. We will do a group meeting after dinner to discuss itinerary, maps/app usage, safety plans, perform a gear shakedown and issue walkie-talkies.

(Your individual mileage/camping subject to change depending on circumstance. Van available to assist with shuttling or getting off trail.)

October 8: Begin your hike!

Camping the first night at Hawk Mountain Shelter 8 miles away. You will have the option to also hike the Approach Trail (8.8 miles) beginning bright and early without your full pack, or you will be shuttled to the top of Springer Mountain where the official start of the AT is. If you choose to hike the Approach Trail, your day’s mileage will be 16+, you will meet the van at Springer at the halfway point to pick up your pack and hike on to Hawk Mountain Shelter.

Oct 9: Hike 7.6 miles to Gooch Mountain Shelter

Oct 10: Hike 12 miles to Woods Hole Shelter

Oct 11: Hike 15.1 miles to Low Gap Shelter. After summiting and descending Blood Mountain, we will break briefly at Neel’s Gap/Mountain Crossings. Your longest day on trail!

Oct 12: Finish up remaining mileage of 9.6 to get to Unicoi Gap (approximately a half day of hiking, 4-6 hours). Upon reaching our established ending point you will be greeted with cold drinks and snacks. Lodging, showers and dinner will be at Amicalola Falls Lodge at the end of this day.

Oct 13 - Depart in the morning and return to the midwest.
